Comfort Dental Docs Helping Others
We wanted you to know about a special project two Comfort Dental doctors made happen.
Drs. Matt Carlston (Aurora office) and Ramsey Warner (Commerce City office) volunteered for a dental mission to Mexico January 15th – 22nd, 2011. They spent an entire week in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico at a orphanage providing free dental care. These guys were amazing! They saw 225 patients! Here are the totals:
Limpiezas: 67 cleaning
Extracciones: 97 pulled teeth
Rellenos: 239 fillings
Fluoruro: 61 fluoride treatments
The clinic is located on a dirt road, north of the town of Guaymas , in a very poor area. The children and adults in this rural area have little or zero access to health care. The need is great and both docs put in five, 10 hour days, seeing all who showed up. No one was turned away!
They both speak Spanish and we had several locals to assist organizing the throng of people. As word got out, more people came every day. We trained a couple of us on how to clean and prep chairs for patients and help in any way we could. That said, Matt and Ramsey were the workhorses! They did this all without suction. The one problem we had with equipment was suction. The pump went out the first minute we plugged it in. Besides that, the equipment worked pretty well. All of the various tools, drills, syringes, forceps..... have been donated over the last several years. The problem is we have not had docs willing to go. Matt and Ramsey stepped up and really made a difference.
The immediate impact to people is stunning. They come in to see us in pain, and leave relieved! Remember, many of these people have no means to see a doctor or dentist. They live with bad teeth. Constant pain. We had kids come in with black molars. Totally rotted out. One girl fell asleep after her tooth was pulled. The doctor said this happens because they have been in pain for so long, the body just totally relaxes once the tooth is pulled.
Some kids had such bad teeth they had to come back several days in a row. Even then, we could not get to all the problems. The adults we worked on also had major problems. Franciso was 70 years old and had never been to the dentist. We pulled two really rotten teeth and he sat for over an hour getting his first cleaning.
There are 3 chairs in the clinic. Anita (volunteer from Seattle ) did cleaning in one and Matt and Ramsey manned the other two. A 3rd dentist from Guaymas, Dr. Irma, volunteered part of the week. She used a table in the back and had patients lay down flat. She was super to work with, spoke no English, but had orange trees in her yard and brought us fresh fruit every day.
These two members of the Comfort Dental family represent to me what is so wonderful about your company and Matt and Ramsey are just a sample of what you do. I thought you would appreciate hearing how they crossed the border to make a difference.
Sincerely, Spencer Guthrie
